The club has had one of the most successful wheelchair basketball squads in Britain over the last fourteen years with most of the large Tournaments seeing the Oldham Owls in action. In 1995 they won their first European Title winning the Andre Vergauwen Cup in Mulhouse, France.

Last season (2002/03) they completed the league & cup double for the second year in succession, whilst securing their third consecutive premiership title.

The second team completed a fantastic clean sweep of all trophies in their division also, winning their north division, the play-offs that ensued and the league cup.

In recognition of their contribution to European Wheelchair Basketball and to celebrate the club’s 25th anniversary the Eurozone of the IWBF awarded the Eurocup Finals to the Oldham Owls in 1999, this coincided with Oldham Borough's 150 years celebration.. In a highly successful and very competitive tournament they finished runners-up. In 2003 again they hosted the finals this time in Manchester with the support of Manchester City Council and sponsorship from BAE SYSTEMS. This time they finished third.

The Owls had two years competing in the Toronto Spitfire Wheelchair Basketball Challenge, which is held in Toronto, Canada over the Easter period of each year. This Tournament is the largest club tournament in the World and is such that some of the smaller and less experienced countries send their National Teams. The club took two teams to the Tournament for the two years they were invited. They played with credit, with the first team gaining third place in 1987 when they lost only one game, that being the semi-final to the eventual winners – Toronto Spitfires – and in 1988 they came fifth whilst playing against the best in North America. The second team played well with the experience proving most valuable in the development of the club’s individual players which resulted in improved performances throughout the ensuing months.

Oldham now has an international reputation for basketball and has hosted on many occasions preliminary rounds of the European and Andre Vergauwen Cups. It is to the credit and the esteem that the Owls have in Europe that they were awarded the finals of the Andre Vergauwen in 1994.

They were also responsible for hosting the Great Britain Open Wheelchair Basketball Tournament when that competition was a regular event in the basketball calendar. All this of course brought International recognition to Oldham and when you look at the roll of honour for basketball you will see that the team has performed with great distinction in the past few years.

Due to the dominance of the Owls on the domestic front the GBWBA has been forced to re-structure the league to make it more competitive, The club now operates three basketball teams - two in the newly formatted first division north with the third team competing in the second division north. A super league will take place after the regular season which will see the Owls again vying for the privilege of competing in Europe again.
