 James BLYTHE

 Antonio DUARTE

Peter FINBOW

Started playing wheelchair basketball in 1992 for the Bradford Bears and with them he won the Bradford basketball festival in 1992. Gained a runners-up medal in the second division North play-off finals in 92/93 (Bradford actually won their conference).

He also helped Bradford win the St Omer (France) tournament in May 1995. Also in 1995 he was voted the most valuable player in the Glasgow International Basketball Tournament.

He was a member of the victorious England team against the auld enemy in Glasgow in 1997. He was also vice-captain of the Great Britain under twenty-three team that took part in the recent World Championships in Canada.

Peter’s personal awards have been for runner-up for best sporting achievement in the 1995 Bradford City Challenge. An honour he won in 1996.

Peter joined the Owls in the close season of 1997 and is a valuable member of the first team.

 Abdi JAMA

    Dan JOHNSON

Went on to become one of the top wheelchair basketball players not only in this country but internationally as well. He was a member of the Great Britain team that won the European Championships in 1995 and were runners-up in 1997 and is a silver medallist from the Atlanta Paralympics in 1996.

Dan is the current club captain and influential leader winning the League and Cup Double in 1995/96 & 1998/99 and which retained the League Championship in 1996/97.

    Julian MATTISON

Julian was a regular member of the Southport team when he took up the game of basketball in 1990 and played for them until 1996 when he joined the Owls. He has improved his game considerably over past two seasons.

 Ade OROGBEMI

Garry PEEL

Oldham’s own ‘Gazza’ (who’s just as skilful but has a better temperament than his football counterpart) has been with the Owls since just after the club came into existence.

By the age of 18-19 he was in the Great Britain squad and was seeing the world. He has been to Australia, Canada, South Korea, Spain and the United States to name but a few places.

He continued playing for his country up until 1992 and then after an absence of two years from the international scene was recalled. He was a vital member of the Great Britain team that not only were runners-up in the World Cup in Edmonton in 1994 but were European Champions in 1995 and Silver Medallists in the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics.

In 1997 in Spain he was in the team that narrowly failed to re-gain their European crown when Great Britain lost to the French in the final.

Gary has won countless of honours with the Owls. He was a member of the teams that won the British League Championships in 1988,89,90,96,97 and 99, the National Cup in 1996 & 99 and their first European trophy the Andre Vergauwen Cup - wheelchair basketball’s equivalent of football’s UEFA Cup in 1995.

In the opinion of everyone at the club (biased of course!) he has been the best player not only for Oldham but also for his country in the last fifteen years with his consistency and experience being invaluable.

Garry retired from Great Britain in 2000 but continues to play an integral part of the Owls first team.

 Richard PULLEN

    Malcolm TARKENTER

After his injury in 1974 he joined the Owls in 1975 and was one of the earliest members that attended our meetings in Failsworth. In this year he competed in his first nationals representing Oldham at basketball.

Shortly after this time he joined Lodge Moor. During his twelve years with the Sheffield side he gained his first international honour in 1979 when he was a member of the under 23 Great Britain wheelchair basketball side that took part in a tournament in France.

In 1980 he was chosen to compete for his country in the 1980 Paralympics in Arnheim. Between the years 1980/85 Malc took up winter sports for the disabled representing Great Britain in sledge hockey and sledge speed skating.

In 1985 he moved to Oswestry and in 1987 was a founder member of the Oswestry club. He helped them gain 4th place in the Nationals.

Malcolm returned to Oldham in 1989 and in his second spell is enjoying what can only be described as his best spell at any club. He was a member of the championship winning sides in 1989,90 & 97. In 1995/96 he was a member of the league and cup double team.

At the age of 37 he was recalled into the Great Britain team that won silver in the 1994 World Championships in Canada. In 1995 he helped his country win gold in the European Nations Championships and in ‘98 he was also in the team that narrowly failed to re-gain the same trophy.

His greatest achievement to date was when he helped Great Britain win Silver at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games and his experience is now a major factor in the Owls successes.
