Sport for the disabled has come a long way from the early days when it was used as a form of therapy for the betterment of people with severe spinal injuries during the last world war. The vision and foresight of one man, the late Sir Ludwig Guttmann, a german refugee and neurosurgeon led to what is now the Paralympic movement. He introduced sport as a part of the rehabilitation of his patients at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury. In those days sport was a part of the treatment, thought by Guttmann to provide a natural form of remedial exercise and to restore activity of mind and self-confidence. It was only natural that the physical benefits of sport brought out the competitive spirit in people. From those humble beginnings in those early days has led to sport for the disabled in all forms and disciplines becoming worldwide. The number of sports and activities that disabled people can take part in nowadays are too numerous to mention here but listed below are a few. There is a competitive element in all sports but dont let that put you off. You can take part in any of these sports just for the exercise, enjoyment and camaraderie that they can provide.
