The Oldham Owls Disabled Sport Club was launched on the 3rd October 1974 at New Vale House. It was formed to "integrate disabled people into society, through sport and recreation". The club gained charitable status on the 16th March 1975 and has a proud record of achievement since its early beginnings. It has enjoyed a good relationship with the local council since its inaugural meeting, with the Mayor of Oldham traditionally being Club President. The Owls continue to support swimming, table tennis, bowls, tennis, water skiing, field and track events amongst other activities. The progressive nature of the club has seen further developments with a fishing section being formed and liaison sought with other clubs to accommodate our members when it was impossible to provide facilities of our own. They have become one of the most successful disabled sports clubs in Great Britain has ever seen with members competing at all levels including every Paralympic Games since the clubs inauguration, with Ernie Guild winning the shot-putt gold in Seoul in 1988. Five of the Owls current basketball squad won silver at the Atlanta Games in 1996. In Angie Payne they have had the womens five times World Water Skiing Champion. Four members of the fishing section won the disabled team fishing championships in 1998, one of whom, Dave Gresty finished fourth overall in the individual championships. The club boasts eight current Basketball Internationals (six men and two women). The clubs basketball coach was also the Great Britain team coach, and the team manager was manager for the national side for a long time. The club physiotherapist has had the honour of being the Ladies Basketball team manager. |
